TECHNICAL  AND  CREW  AREAS

“She is designed and built to cut through savage seas not skirting around bad weather and to cruise long distances - at 10 knots she has a 10,000nm range”.

THE WHEELHOUSE

The paperless bridge is a business-like, no-frills area with a traditional layout. Upholstered in tobacco colored leather, the understated look belies the top-notch navigation equipment on display including Navis Dynamic Positioning. The ship’s office is further aft on the portside next to the functional hospital room. The comfortable captain’s quarters have an en suite bathroom and a generous working area.

THE  ENGINE  ROOM

All tankage and machinery are located on one technical deck below the waterline. A carefully considered choice, Captain Rob Williamson, who acted as project manager for the construction, explained that “by putting the engine room on what would traditionally have been the tank deck, we have completely freed up the lower deck for accommodations” The arrangement works well.

Generator room

The well-laid out engine room is divided into three distinct sections: the machinery room with the stabilizer compartments port and starboard leads aft into the engine control room and switchboard room which overlooks the generator room amidships. PLANET NINE runs three Caterpillar C18 generators with HUG converters for clean exhaust emissions. The engine room, with the aft stabilizer compartment, houses the two Caterpillar 3516 engines. PLANET NINE carries 340,000 liters of fuel which enables her to cruise over 6,000nm at 14 knots or 10,000nm at 10 knots.

The engines and generators were overhauled during the 9-month, 5-million-euro refit completed in May 2024. As well as the 5-year class survey, other works included the servicing and upgrade of the stabilizers, removal and rebuild of all shell doors and hydraulics, the servicing of all valves, pumps, and actuators and the replacement of the freshwater makers, renewed air conditioning and a complete paint job just to mention a few.

ANCHOR  DECK

The forward mooring deck is equipped with a 1000kg davit for launching the Zodiac Milpro tender and the SOLAS rescue boat. The anchor windlasses and mooring capstans are manufactured by Officine Navali Nanni while the anchors and anchor chain are made by Posidonia.

The main guest living areas are on the upper decks so the guest galley and a large pantry are conveniently located on the deck portside for easy service. A large dumb waiter serves the upper deck, the bridge deck and the sun deck. Most appliances and cooking equipment are by Miele. There is plenty of cold storage on board including several cold rooms and a walk-in freezer. “We can store luxury food for about a month. There’s storage for plenty more but after that you start relying more on canned and ambient stored produce”.

PLANET NINE carries up to 22 crew in 12 cabins. There is a crew galley on the lower deck, adjacent to the crew mess, that is used during busy charters and offers a welcome relief for the guest chef. The laundry, equipped with eight heavy duty Miele washers and dryers, is located on the tank deck near the crew lounge.
